Optimize Your LinkedIn Headline
Absolutely, the most important piece of real estate in your entire LinkedIn Profile is your Headline. There are 120 characters in your LinkedIn Profile Headline. You don’t have much space here so plan it well because this is almost always the second thing that your viewers see when they view your profile. What’s first? Your picture.
If your picture isn’t too scary, your Profile viewers will want to know a little more about you. How does your viewer get a quick idea of who you are? They look at your Headline. And this is where the old saying: “You never get a second chance to make a strong first impression.”, is absolutely spot on. Your Headline is going to be that first impression for virtually every person who ever views your Profile. Yes, your picture is important, but that doesn’t tell anything about you. Your Headline says: “This is who I am in a nutshell.” “This is what I do.” “This is what I am passionate about.” “This is my area of expertise.”
Now, obviously, you can’t give any detail about who you are, what you do and what you are passionate about in your Headline. But you can announce it in powerful Keywords and phrases. If you don’t trumpet who you are here, people will be left wondering. Do you really want that first impression to leave your viewers wondering? For one reason or another this viewer has chosen to visit your individual professional website; they get to your Headline…drum roll please… and they are left wondering who you are and what you do. That’s not good is it? Can we just all agree, that that’s not good?
Now, if you create a LinkedIn Profile and you don’t do anything to your Headline, what appears by default? Your current Job Title. So, if your Headline is the most important real estate and all you have is your Job Title, what is that communicating to your viewers? Let me spell it out for you. It communicates that either you were too lazy to do anything more creative OR you don’t understand anything about LinkedIn. Are they consciously thinking that? Well, if they are me they are thinking that. But even if they’re not consciously thinking that, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you squandered a prime opportunity to communicate who you are. For you football fans, you fumbled the ball at the goal line.
When a prospective client looks at your LinkedIn Profile and reads your headline, he/she must receive a clear message about who you are and what you do.
