Why an Introduction is the Best Way to Grow Your Business

I have three quick questions I’d like to ask you. 

1)       When was the last time you made a prospecting call that resulted in someone enthusiastically accepting your invitation to meet?
2)       When was the last time a trusted colleague introduced you to someone who enthusiastically accepted your invitation to meet?
3)       When was the last time you did a public speech that resulted in a conversation with someone who was enthusiastic about meeting with you?


I ask these three questions for one simple reason. These are essentially the three basic means by which you can initiate a conversation with a prospective client. You can prospect them or you can get introduced to them or you can establish yourself as a SME (Subject Matter Expert) so the people who hear you speak will want to meet with you.

If you examine these three methods further, it’s easy to see that when you prospect someone, you tend to be put into a subordinate position. When you are introduced to someone by a trusted colleague, you tend to enter the relationship on a level playing field as a colleague and when you establish yourself as a SME you enter with elevated status.

So, which one would you choose? Certainly, we would prefer to enter into a business relationship with someone who esteems us highly, much rather than someone who looks down their nose at us. No question about it, establishing yourself as a SME is the best way to position yourself to begin a conversation with a prospective client. However, most B2B Professional Service Providers don’t have the time to book themselves as SME’s often enough to generate enough new business. We take the opportunities when they come our way, but they aren’t predictable enough.

That’s why I would argue that getting introduced to your Ideal Prospects is the very best way to grow your business predictably. You enter the business relationship on a level playing field as a colleague AND if you are intentional about it you can get introduced to as many of your Ideal Prospects as you choose. 

You heard me right. You can get introduced to as many of your Ideal Prospects as you choose and you can do it predictably.
